Term 1 - Nottingham Trent University

First term at uni done! It has been a crazy busy yet amazing experience so far. I have throughly enjoyed it; both social and work aspects.

In my first term I completed 4 projects. They were all very intuiting and resourceful. I have definitely  developed my skills in graphics and I am excited to use these new skills in future.

The main thing I learnt:

ITTERATE ITTERATE ITTERATE ITTERATE

This is the most important part I took from my first term. Repeating things again and again is 100% time consuming and can be very draining, but it is so worth it for the end product. By repeating designs again and again I was able to find what works best and not get stuck on the first thing that I set my eyes on.

Truth, Lies and Nonsense

This was a one week long project that we completed in our first week of uni. It was quite a crazy week, we were told to only wear yellow, black and white the entire week. Those were our parameters for this project; we were only allowed to use the colours black, white and yellow.

Final Product

10x10x10

This project was a 2 week long project. In the first week we used the parameters: red, white, black, circles, squares, triangles and the fonts georgia and activ grotesk. We had to complete a very fast paced task where we create 10 compositions in response to graphic design terminologies. So at the end of the week we ended up with 180 designs which we had created, 90 were only shape and 90 were only type.

In the final week we had to create a posterzine where on one side there were 8 separate designs and on the other a final poster. These had to be using the parameters we were first set.

Bespoke Typeface: Grace Jones

For this project we had to create our own bespoke typeface inspired by an exhibition which we had been given to visit and take notes on. I was given the "Grace Before Jones: Camera, Disco, Studio" exhibition. It was very interesting exhibition which showed Jones' collaborations with various artists. My final typeface is inspired by the disco part of the exhibition. It also shows Jones' personality as the type is very out there and jazzy.

Album Cover: Musical Squares

This was the final project I did of this term. It was to create an album cover inspired by the album "I am a bird now" by Antony and the Johnsons. When I was researching about the band I discovered that the lead singer is a Trans Woman hence I used this to inform my album cover as some of the songs are related to trans issues. It was a very interesting project to complete as I used the feeling and words of the music to create my final outcome.
